Specification guide

Pallet sizes, grades and how to specify, so the quote is right first time.

Eight pallet families, five condition grades and the six things every pallet order should state. Each type has its own page with dimensions, entry, base, load rating and buying notes.

Quick answer

What types of pallet are there?

Eight types turn up on Australian docks: the standard 1165 x 1165, the Euro 1200 x 800, export pallets heat treated and ISPM 15 marked, plastic, heavy duty rated two tonne and up, half pallets, one way pallets and custom sizes. Each has its own page with a spec table. Say six things on a quote, the type, the size, the grade, the count, the postcode and whether there is a forklift, and it comes back right first time with the grade in writing.

Not sure which one you have

Measure it and we will name it.

Two measurements tells you the family, whether it racks in Australian racking, whether it can go on a ship and what we pay for it. The one that catches people out is 1140 against 1165, because they look identical and only one of them belongs in your racking.

Six things to specify

What do I tell a pallet supplier to get the quote right first time?

Most wrong deliveries trace back to one of these being assumed instead of stated.

  1. 01FootprintLength × width in millimetres. 1165 x 1165 is the Australian standard; 1200 x 800 is Euro; 1100 x 1100 and 1200 x 1000 are export sizes.
  2. 02Entry2 way or 4 way. Forklifts and pallet jacks need 4 way entry on most sites.
  3. 03BaseBearer (runners) or block. Block bases turn in any direction and suit roller conveyors; bearers are stronger along their length.
  4. 04Load ratingDynamic, static and racked, from the datasheet of the pallet supplied. State the heaviest loaded pallet you will rack.
  5. 05Condition gradeNew, A, B, C or R, defined below. The grade goes in the quote and on the delivery docket.
  6. 06TreatmentISPM 15 heat treatment for timber leaving the country, specified at the time of order.

Condition grades

How are pallet grades defined? In writing, on every quote.

These are the definitions 360 quotes and buys on. If a pallet arrives below the grade on the docket, tell us within 7 days with a photo and we replace it or credit it.

Grade B, standard usedSound and dry, up to two repaired boards, none missing, minor surface marks on the bearers. The best value for general warehousing and distribution.
Grade C, economy, one wayLoad bearing, may have one missing top board and several repairs, damp accepted, stains accepted, no chemical contamination. For loads that are not coming back. Called restricted use on the delivery docket.

Questions about specification

What are the standard pallet sizes in Australia?

The Australian standard is 1165 x 1165 mm. Euro pallets are 1200 x 800 mm, export pallets are 1100 x 1100 or 1200 x 1000 mm, and half pallets are 1165 x 582 or 800 x 600 mm. Plastic pallets come in the same footprints.

What do the grades mean?

New is unused. A is premium used, square and clean, for racking and customer facing use. B is standard used, sound and dry, the value choice for warehousing. C is economy or one way, load bearing with repairs and marks accepted. R is a repairable core, bought for repair, never supplied as a working pallet.

What is the load rating of a pallet?

The weight the pallet is rated to carry, stated separately for dynamic (moving on a forklift), static (on the floor) and racked loads. It always comes from the datasheet of the pallet supplied, and the 2 tonne standard pallet is the usual racking choice.

Do I need ISPM 15 pallets?

Only for timber pallets leaving Australia. Heat treated pallets carry the ISPM 15 mark and most countries refuse untreated timber. Plastic pallets are exempt.
