Pallet identifier
What pallet is this? Measure it and find out.
Two measurements and you will know what you have, whether it racks in Australian racking, whether it can go on a ship, and what we pay for it. The one that catches people out is 1140 against 1165. They look identical and only one of them belongs in your racking.

Quick answer
What pallet is this?
Measure the top deck, long side first. 1165 x 1165 mm is the Australian standard and racks in Australian racking; 1140 x 1140 mm looks identical, is 25 mm short on both sides and does not; 1200 x 800 mm is a Euro; 1100 x 1100 mm is a one-trip export pallet. Timber going overseas needs the IPPC wheat mark with HT for heat treatment, and a repair with untreated boards cancels it. Sorted A grade pallets are bought at $3 each ex GST and B grade at $2, and sixty or more reusable pallets in Greater Sydney is a free pickup.

How do I tell what pallet I have?
Measure the top deck with a tape, long side first, and pick the footprint below: the tool names it, says whether it racks in Australian racking and whether it can go overseas. If the two sides measure 1165 mm it is the Australian standard; 1140 mm is the look-alike that does not belong in your racking.
Every footprint
Which pallet sizes turn up on an Australian dock?
Measured across the top deck, long side first. Racking answers assume beams set for the Australian standard, which is what most warehouses here run. Load ratings always come off the datasheet of the pallet supplied, never off the footprint.

Reading the stamp
What does the IPPC mark on a pallet mean?
Timber packaging crossing a border needs ISPM 15 treatment and this mark. Plastic is exempt. The mark has to be legible, permanent and on at least two opposite sides of the pallet.
- 01The wheat symbolThe IPPC logo. If it is not there, the pallet has not been certified under ISPM 15 and it is not going overseas, whatever else is stamped on it.
- 02The country codeTwo letters, the ISO code of the country that certified it. AU for an Australian treatment provider.
- 03The registration numberThe unique number of the treatment provider. In Australia these are issued under the Australian Wood Packaging Certification Scheme, and the number is what lets anyone trace the treatment back.
- 04The treatment codeHT is heat treatment, the Australian standard. MB is methyl bromide, which a number of destinations refuse, the European Union among them. DH is dielectric heating. DB after any of them means debarked.
- 05Repairs cancel itThe stamp covers the pallet as it was treated. Replace a board or a bearer with untreated timber and the pallet is no longer compliant. It has to be re-treated and re-marked. This is the one that stops containers at the wharf.
Now you know what it is
Find out what it is worth.
We pay $3 a pallet ex GST for A grade and $2 for B grade, any type, when the pile is sorted with nothing broken through it, subject to inspection. Collections of 60 or more reusable pallets in Greater Sydney are free. A pile with broken timber through it is quoted as a clearance, so you know the cost before anything is booked.
Questions about identifying pallets
How do I tell a 1165 from a 1140?
With a tape, because nothing else will do it. They look identical. A 1165 x 1165 is the Australian standard and the racking in most warehouses here is set for it. A 1140 x 1140 is 25 mm short on both sides, usually arrives on imported freight, and gets sold as a standard pallet. In racking set for 1165 it has less bearing on each rail, which is how loads come down. Measure every square pallet before it goes in a rack.
What does the stamp on the side mean?
If it has a wheat symbol it is the IPPC mark, which is what ISPM 15 requires on timber packaging that crosses a border. It carries the country code, the treatment provider's registration number and the treatment code. HT is heat treated, which is the Australian standard. MB is methyl bromide, which some destinations refuse, the European Union among them. The mark has to be legible and on at least two opposite sides.
My pallet is stamped but it has been repaired. Is it still good for export?
No. The stamp covers the pallet as it was treated. Once a board or a bearer is replaced with untreated timber the pallet is no longer compliant, and it has to be re-treated and re-marked before it crosses a border. This is the one that catches people out, usually at the wharf.
Do plastic pallets need ISPM 15?
No. The rule covers solid timber packaging. Plastic pallets go on a ship with no treatment and no stamp, which is one of the reasons exporters use them on repeat lanes.
What is my pallet worth?
Sorted A grade pallets earn $3 each ex GST and B grade $2, subject to inspection. Every other type is priced on photos and a count, because Euro, export, plastic and mixed lots move week to week. The instant offer gives you both answers and the collection cost.
