Pallet spend
What do pallets cost a distributor a year? Put your numbers in.
Pallets are bought in lots of fifty and written off in cartons, which is why few operations know the yearly figure. The calculator below works it out from four numbers you already have, and shows what the inbound stack behind the dock earns if it is sold instead of dumped.

Quick answer
What do pallets cost a distributor a year?
Pallets sent out each week, less the share that comes back usable, times 52, times the price of a replacement. A distributor sending 150 pallets a week with 60% coming back replaces about 3,100 a year; at the B grade from-price of $18.99 ex GST that is about $59,200 a year, or $7.60 on every pallet shipped. The inbound dock offsets it: sorted A grade pallets in that pile are bought at $3 each and B grade at $2, and from sixty reusable pallets the Greater Sydney pickup is free. The calculator on this page runs your own numbers.
The arithmetic
How is yearly pallet spend worked out?
Pallets sent out each week, less the share that comes back usable, is the number you replace. Multiply by 52 and by the price of a replacement and you have the year. A distributor sending 150 pallets a week with 60% coming back usable replaces 60 a week, 3,120 a year; at the B grade from-price of $18.99 ex GST that is about $59,200 a year, or $7.60 on every pallet shipped. Most operations guess a third of that, because the invoices arrive in lots of fifty and nobody adds them up.
The second half of the sum is the inbound dock. Raw material and imports arrive on pallets the outbound product never reuses; the sound standard 1165s in that pile are bought, and the broken ones are a clearance line. An operation receiving 120 pallets a week with 40% sound stock has about 2,500 saleable pallets a year sitting behind the dock.
The calculator
What is your pallet spend a year?
Four numbers and the year's pallet spend is on the screen: how many pallets leave each week, how many of those come back usable, what you pay for a replacement, and what arrives on your inbound dock. Defaults are a mid-sized distributor on B grade pallets at our published from-price; change any of them.
What moves it
What changes the number most?
- Return rate. Every ten points of pallets that come back usable is worth about a seventh of the spend at a 60% return rate; a return rule written into customer terms is the cheapest pallet you will ever buy.
- Grade choice. A grade for customer-facing loads, B grade for general warehousing, C grade for one way shipments; paying A grade prices for pallets that never come back is the most common leak: the grades explained.
- Damage at the dock. Forklift tines through the lead board and overhanging loads crushed in transit turn a reusable pallet into a core; packing a pallet properly cuts both.
- The inbound pile. Sorted and counted, it is sold on a schedule and the pickup is free from sixty in Greater Sydney; left mixed, it is a clearance charge: the 60 pallet rule.
- Pooling. Pooled pallets move the cost from purchase to daily hire and transfers; whether that wins depends on where the pallets go: hire against buying.

Questions about pallet spend
How many pallets does a distributor buy a year?
Pallets sent out per week, less the share that comes back usable, times 52. At 150 a week and a 60% return that is about 3,100 replacement pallets a year.
What does a pallet cost per shipment?
Yearly pallet spend divided by pallets shipped. At the defaults above it is about $7.60 per pallet shipped, which belongs in the cost to serve of every order.
Is it cheaper to buy pallets or hire them?
It depends on where the pallets go and how many come back. Owning wins when pallets stay in your network or go export; pooling wins when they vanish into retail distribution centres that insist on it. The hire against buying page works it through.
Does the calculator include delivery?
No. The from-price is ex GST for lots of fifty or more; Greater Sydney delivery is inside the quoted price when we quote, and the written quote replaces the calculator.
What is my inbound stack worth?
Sorted A grade pallets earn $3 each ex GST and B grade $2, subject to inspection; repairable cores are credited and broken timber is a clearance line. The what-are-my-pallets-worth page gives an instant figure.
