What pallet delivery costs

The per pallet rate, the consignment charge and the fuel levy, shown separately, with the arithmetic.

Quick answer

What does pallet delivery cost?

Pallet delivery costs three things: a rate per pallet that steps down as the consignment grows, one consignment charge per booking, and a fuel levy on the two. On the published Sydney to Melbourne lane one pallet lands at $207.40 ex GST and eight pallets at $110.56 a pallet, because the $45 consignment charge is spread across more positions. Consolidating two small consignments into one booking is usually the cheapest thing you can do.

Most freight companies will not put a number on a page. The two lanes below are published in full, and the arithmetic that produces them is published with them, so you can work out your own load before you ring anyone.

How is a pallet delivery price built?

Three parts, in this order. A rate per pallet that steps down as the consignment gets bigger. One consignment charge per booking, whatever the size, covering the pickup, the paperwork and the handling at both docks. Then a fuel levy as a percentage of those two. Nothing else is added afterwards unless you ask for it, and anything you do ask for is on the quote before you book.

Written as a sum: (pallets multiplied by the rate, plus the consignment charge) plus the fuel levy on that subtotal. That is the whole formula. There is no account fee, no minimum term and no monthly commitment.

PalletsRateTotal ex GSTPer pallet
1 pallet$125 a pallet$207.40$207.40
2 pallets$106.25 a pallet$314.15$157.07
3 pallets$106.25 a pallet$443.77$147.92

12 pallets$85 a pallet$1299.30$108.27
20 pallets$85 a pallet$2128.90$106.45

One pallet lands at $207.40 because the $45 consignment charge is carried by a single position. At eight pallets the same charge is spread eight ways and the delivered cost falls to $110.56 a pallet. That is the whole reason per pallet freight pricing looks strange at low volumes, and it is why consolidating two small consignments into one booking is usually the cheapest thing you can do. Full detail on this lane.

Why does the first pallet cost the most?

It is not a penalty for sending a small load. A single pallet costs almost as much to pick up, paperwork, load, cross dock and deliver as six do, so the fixed part of the job falls on one position instead of being shared. If you have two small consignments going the same way in the same week, putting them on one booking will save you more than negotiating the rate will.

What is not on this page

Metro delivery inside a single city, and every lane other than the two above, are quoted rather than published. That is not a hedge. On metro work the suburb, the vehicle that fits the site and whether there is a forklift at each end move the price more than the distance does, so a published figure would be wrong more often than it was right. On other lanes the cost base is not confirmed end to end yet, and a rate we cannot stand behind is worse than no rate. Both come back the same business day when you ask before 2pm.

Questions about pallet freight cost

What does it cost to send one pallet interstate?

On the two lanes we publish, Sydney to Melbourne is $207.40 ex GST delivered and Sydney to Brisbane is $213.50 ex GST delivered. A single pallet always carries the whole consignment charge, so the per pallet figure is at its worst at one and improves at every volume break above it.

Why is the per pallet price lower when I send more?

Two things move at once. The rate per pallet steps down at the volume breaks, and the flat consignment charge gets divided across more pallets. Both work in the same direction, which is why the eighth pallet costs roughly half what the first one does.

What is the fuel levy and why is it separate?

A percentage added to the freight and consignment charge that moves with diesel. It is shown separately rather than buried in the rate so you can see what you are paying for, and so the rate does not have to be rewritten every time the price of fuel moves. The current levy is 22 per cent.

Is the price ex GST?

Every figure on this page is ex GST, for a standard 1165 by 1165 pallet up to 1.4 metres high, dock to dock. Tail lift, hand unload and residential delivery are charged separately and appear on the quote before you book, not after.

What does pallet delivery inside Sydney cost?

Metro work is quoted per job rather than published, because the price depends on the suburb, the vehicle that fits the site and whether there is a forklift at both ends. Those variables move the figure more than the distance does, so a published metro rate would be wrong more often than it was right. Send the pickup suburb, the delivery suburb and the pallet count and the price comes back the same business day.

Do you publish rates on other lanes?

Not yet. The two lanes above are the ones where the cost base is confirmed end to end. Every other lane is quoted, and the quote uses the same structure you can see here: a rate per pallet that steps down with volume, one consignment charge and the fuel levy.

Do I need an account or a minimum volume?

No. There is no account to open, no minimum term and no monthly commitment. The minimum charge on a consignment is $60, which only matters on very small single pallet work.
