Pallets for building products
Pallets for building product suppliers: built for the dense loads.
A pallet of tiles, bagged cement or roofing steel weighs what a pallet of cartons never will. The pallet has to carry it across beams, off a tailgate and onto a half built site, and most of them never come back. Here is how to buy for that.

Quick answer
Which pallet carries building products?
Heavy duty hardwood rated for 2 tonnes under bricks, pavers, bagged cement and tiles, custom sizes made to the tile pack or the sheet length, and one way or grade C pallets for product that goes to site and stays there. New and grade A stock stays in the DC racking. Returns from trade customers are sorted into sale, core credit and clearance, in writing, before a truck is sent.
By product
Which pallet carries which building product?
| Product | Pallet | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bricks, pavers, blocks | Heavy duty hardwood, 2 tonne rated, or a custom block pallet | Dense, concentrated load that a standard pallet's bearers will not take in racking or on a tailgate. |
| Bagged cement, render, tile adhesive | Heavy duty hardwood 1165 | Bags shift and the load sits on the whole deck, so a full top deck and thick bearers. |
| Roof tiles | Custom size to the tile pack, heavy duty | Tile packs are strapped to the pallet and craned, so the pallet is sized to the pack and the strap points. |
| Steel, roofing sheets, lintels | Custom length bearers, or a heavy duty standard with the load strapped | Long and heavy; the pallet is a lifting cradle more than a platform. |
| Plasterboard, insulation, light lines | Grade B standard or one way | Bulky and light; the pallet is a one trip platform that stays on site. |
| Imported product arriving on export pallets | Restacked onto standard 1165 for racking and delivery | Import pallets are odd sizes and rarely rackable; restacking at the DC keeps the racking and the trucks standard. |
Heavy duty hardwood is rated for racking at 2 tonnes and weighs 45 to 60 kg itself. Which pallets are safe in racking covers the receipt check; custom pallets covers sizes made to the product.
The site end
What happens to the pallet on a building site?
Mostly it stays there. A pallet delivered to a house slab or a commercial site is unloaded by a crane truck or a forklift and the empty ends up in a pile by the fence until a skip takes it. That is why building product suppliers buy a lot of one way and grade C pallets for outbound, and keep the new and grade A stock for the racking in the DC.
Where the pallets do come back, from a builder's yard, a plumbing merchant or a tile showroom, they come back as a mixed stack: some sound, some with a cracked bearer from the crane, some broken. That is a sort, a sale, a credit and a clearance, and the written offer shows all four lines. From sixty reusable pallets anywhere in Greater Sydney the pickup is free.
- New and grade A for the DC racking, one way and grade C for outbound that stays on site
- Heavy duty for anything over about a tonne a pallet, with the rating on the quote
- Custom sizes made to the tile pack, the sheet length or the strap points
- Returns sorted, bought, credited or cleared, in writing before the truck is sent
- Delivered on a vehicle that fits the yard, from a van to a 12 pallet rigid with a tailgate
Buying pattern
How do building product suppliers usually buy?
Two lines on one standing order. A weekly drop of one way or grade C for outbound, counted against last week's despatches, and a monthly top up of new or grade A for the racking. Heavy duty and custom pallets are ordered against the product forecast, because they are made to size and sit in the yard until the product arrives.
Price moves with grade and count, not with the product. Published from-prices for the standard grades, including the 2 tonne heavy duty pallet, are on the prices page; custom sizes are quoted from a drawing or a sample pallet in a day.
Getting a number
Tell us the product and the weight per pallet.
Say what goes on it, how heavy a loaded pallet is, whether it goes into racking and whether it comes back. The quote names the pallet, the grade and the rating in writing, priced the same business day when you ask before 2pm, delivered from Prestons across Greater Sydney, Wollongong, the Central Coast and Newcastle.
Questions from building product suppliers
What pallet do I need for a tonne of bricks?
A heavy duty hardwood pallet rated for 2 tonnes, or a custom block pallet made to the brick pack. A standard grade A pallet carries a tonne on the floor but is not the right choice on beams or off a crane with that load.
Can I get pallets made to my tile pack size?
Yes. Custom pallets are made to a drawing or a sample pallet: deck size, bearer positions and strap points. Lead time depends on the size and count, quoted in a day.
Do you supply one way pallets for deliveries to site?
Yes. One way and grade C pallets are priced for a pallet that stays on the site. Keep the new and grade A stock for the racking and the customer facing loads.
Can you restack imported product onto standard pallets?
We supply the standard 1165 pallets for the restack; the restacking itself is done at your DC. Say the count and the weekly inbound and the pallets arrive ahead of the containers.
Will you take back pallets from our trade customers?
Sixty or more reusable pallets anywhere in Greater Sydney is a free pickup. Mixed stacks from builders' yards are sorted into sale, core credit and clearance, and the written offer shows each line before anything is booked.
How much does a heavy duty pallet cost?
The published from-price for a 2 tonne heavy duty hardwood pallet is on the prices page, ex GST, delivered across Greater Sydney in lots of 50 or more. Larger counts and standing orders are priced on the volume.
