Warehouse consumables
What do warehouse consumables cost, and which ones does nobody track?
Stretch wrap, strapping, labels, cartons, tape, pallets and the dozen small lines behind them are bought by whoever runs out first, charged to whichever cost centre was open, and almost never measured per pallet shipped. Put them on one list, divide the spend by the pallets that left, and the figure is usually the most surprising line in the building.

Quick answer
What do warehouse consumables cost?
Stretch wrap, strapping, labels, cartons, tape and the pallets that never come back are bought by whoever runs out first and almost never measured. Twelve months of invoices divided by the pallets shipped in the same year gives consumables cost per pallet shipped, the number that stays comparable as volume changes. Most of the saving is in specification and fewer lines, not in the price per roll.
The list
Which consumables does a warehouse actually use?
| Line | What drives the usage | Where the waste hides |
|---|---|---|
| Stretch wrap | Pallets wrapped, the wrap pattern, hand or machine, film gauge | Hand wrapping uses more film than a machine for a weaker wrap; a thicker film than the load needs; the extra turns at the top of every pallet |
| Strapping and corner boards | Loads stacked high or unstable, export loads | Strapping on loads that wrap alone would hold, and no strapping on the ones that get crushed, which is the costlier of the two |
| Labels and ribbon | Lines picked, labels per carton, printer settings | Re-prints, two labels where one carries the information, the wrong label stock for the printer |
| Cartons and void fill | Carton picks, the carton range, the fill | A carton range with twelve sizes used at four; a void filled with air because the carton was wrong |
| Tape | Cartons sealed, tape width, dispensers | Three strips where one does the job; tape bought in a width the dispensers were not made for |
| Pallets | Pallets sent out and not returned, the grade bought | The largest consumable in most buildings and the least measured: the spend calculator |
| Gloves, cutters, bags, cable ties | Headcount and shifts | Small per unit, large per year, bought ad hoc at retail prices |
The last column is where the method starts. None of these lines is expensive on its own; together they are commonly a line comparable to the freight fuel levy, and unlike the levy, every one of them is in your control.
The measure
How do I measure consumables spend?
- Pull twelve months of invoices for every line in the table. From every supplier and every card, including the retail runs. Put them on one sheet with the quantity, not just the dollars.
- Divide by the pallets shipped in the same twelve months. That gives consumables cost per pallet shipped, the number that stays comparable as volume changes. Do the same per carton for the carton lines.
- Take one unit off the floor and weigh or count it. Film used on one pallet, labels on one carton, tape per carton. Multiply up and compare with the invoices. The gap between what one unit uses and what was bought is loss: damaged rolls, spare stock in three places, and whatever walked out.
- Set a specification per line. Film gauge and wrap pattern, label stock and size, carton range, tape width. Buying stops being a product search and becomes a reorder.
The figure per pallet shipped belongs in the cost to serve, next to freight and pallets. A business that knows its freight to the dollar and its consumables to the nearest pallet of film is working blind on one of its three packaging costs.
The savings
Where does the saving usually come from?
- Specification before price. Matching the film gauge and the wrap pattern to the load usually cuts film used per pallet before a single quote is asked for, and a load that is wrapped to a pattern arrives in better condition, which is a freight claim saved as well.
- Fewer lines. A carton range cut from twelve sizes to five, one tape width, one label stock. Fewer lines means fewer suppliers, larger lots and less stock on the shelf.
- One supplier per category, tested against the market. Consumables are a recurring spend line that rolls over for years; the procurement review is the work that tests it.
- A reorder point and one person who buys. The retail runs stop, the three stock locations become one, and the quantity on the sheet starts to match the quantity on the floor.
- The pallet line on its own. Pallets sent out and never returned are the largest consumable most distributors buy; a return rule in customer terms and the right grade for each lane move the number more than any film negotiation: the grades explained.
Most of these are done in a month with no capital. The film and strapping specification is the one that often needs a trial on the floor, and it is the one with the largest claim saving behind it.
The baseline
Send twelve months of consumables invoices and the pallets shipped.
It comes back as cost per pallet shipped by line, the lines that are out of specification, and what a procurement review would be likely to move, priced as work.
Questions about consumables
What counts as a warehouse consumable?
Anything used up by moving product: stretch wrap, strapping, corner boards, labels, ribbon, cartons, void fill, tape, pallets that do not come back, and the small lines such as gloves, cutters, bags and cable ties.
How much do warehouse consumables cost per pallet?
It depends on the load and the method, which is why the measure is twelve months of invoices divided by pallets shipped on your own site. The figure is set by film pattern, carton range and pallet returns more than by the unit price of anything.
Is machine wrapping worth it?
For a site wrapping a steady volume every day, usually yes: a machine uses less film per pallet for a more consistent wrap, and the saving is in film and in freight damage. The trial on your own loads is what settles it.
Should pallets be treated as a consumable?
If they leave and do not come back, yes, and they are usually the largest line. The pallet spend calculator works out the yearly figure from pallets sent and the share that returns.
Who should buy consumables?
One person, from a specification, at a reorder point. Most waste is not in the price per roll; it is in retail runs, three stock locations, and a dozen lines where four would do.
